In his cage for the trip to the vet....Our beloved cat, Jacky, is now about 7 months old and the family have decided that he should be neutered. In Islam, neutering an animal is deemed haram (prohibited) as essentially, the animal's desire to propagate is removed...thus interfering with God's creation.
A search on the Internet led me to a forum that discussed this aspect of Islam. Apparently, according to local religious authorities, neutering is deemed harus (optional) as long as neutering is not detrimental to the animal.
The decision to neuter Jacky was made with his well-being in mind. I believe it is wrong to allow animals to breed uncontrollably as they may end up as strays on the streets, scavenging for food and sometimes being treated inhumanely by humans. From a health point of view, controlling the population of stray animals would also reduce the likelihood of diseases being spread by strays.
Jacky was taken to the vet a day before the procedure. He spent another night at the vet after the procedure and was taken home on the third day. He had to be given antibiotics for about a week to prevent infection and although he initially wobbled a little when walking, he is now hale and hearty and as playful as ever....we love you, Jacky!
