This show is strictly for people (baby boomers?) who like ABBA songs and like to have a 'good time'. Don't go to the show expecting any gripping story line - just go with the mind of enjoying the songs, reminiscing and having a lot of fun. The story line evolves around a soppy romance comedy script that creates a delightful evening of sheer fun and pleasure.
The story concerns Sophie, whose mother Donna, owns a small hotel on a tiny Greek Island. Sophie is getting married and she would like to have her father walk her down the aisle. However, Donna will not tell her who her real father is – so she secretly reads her mother’s diary and discovers that there are three men who could possibly be her father as her mother had a physical relationship with all three over a period of 15 days.
Sophie secretly invites all three men to the wedding. The fun starts when the three men arrive on the island and discover why they have been invited. In addition to strong singing voices that do justice to ABBA songs, the cast also gives good comic performances. Although some of the songs are not directly related to the story line, they are ingeniously slipped into the story line, and the audience bursts into favourable applause each time it happens.
I caught this show in Sydney about 4 years ago and really had a lot of fun with a responsive audience who sang and danced to the foot-stomping tunes. This musical is a must for all ABBA fans!!
