Golf is a I game I am very passionate about. Being an "outdoor" person, I am in my elements when I am on a golf course - I enjoy walking the wide (and sometimes not-so-wide), fairways dotted with bunkers (sand traps) and water hazards.
It gives me a sense of "freedom" - the same feeling I get when biking without a helmet with the wind in my hair or freefalling during a skydive! I guess I am a true adrenaline junkie (which, by the way, is a nickname for skydivers. The other nickname is "air head" but I guess I prefer the former).
How can anyone not want to spend as much time as possible getting healthy exercise on a field of green? Walking, talking with friends, enjoying the benefits of a day in the sun combined with a mental and physical challenge that is also a personal challenge.
You may play with others, but the game of golf is all about perfecting what you do...and while not everyone can be an Arnold Palmer or Tiger Woods, watching your own technique get better is almost as satisfying as getting that hole-in-one. Almost...
I also enjoy the flora, fauna and expensive real estate that you can sometimes find in golf courses, particularly overseas. In Surabaya, the Taman Dayu Golf Resort has a mini, terraced, paddy plot which was being tended to while we were teeing-off!
Then, in Chiangmai, at Gassan Khuntan Golf Resort, we spent most of our time plucking lychees with the help of our caddies from trees that were plentiful in the peaceful, tropical, golf course with stunning views. As you may have guessed, we did this because our games were not too good lor!
In Bukit Pelangi (Rainbow Hill) Golf Resort, Bogor, Indonesia, we were awed by the expensive real estate set amid lush greeneries. One of these million Ringgit homes belonged to the Malaysian-born General Manager of the resort.
My surgeon advised that as part of my healing therapy, I should go out and do the things I love to do....well, Prof...those words were like music to my ears!!! Since I am not yet ready to swing a club, I decided to join Audi and Torah for a round of putting.
Last night, I stayed at Torah's house. We had an early dinner of Teochew porridge and then Dr Noraini and Teh dropped by to say hello. Torah's daughter Yasmin and hubby Ashraf also dropped by say hello to me as they could not make it to the hospital.
Early this morning, after a nutritious breakfast of toasted wholemeal bread with half-boiled eggs and juice (celery, green apply, cucumber and bitter gourd), we headed to Kelab Darul Ehsan (KDE). At the golf registration counter, I collected my current handicap card.
I have not played golf at KDE for 6 months now and everyone who knew me had been asking Audi what happened to me. It was good to be back...to see the familiar cars at the parking lots and familiar faces waving hello as Torah and I waited at the Golfers' Terrance for Audi.
While waiting, we saw 4-year old Jemima Abd Aziz practising hard on the practice green with grandpa. When they were done, she came to the Golfers' Terrace and I asked her if she would like to have her photos taken.
She agreed and during the photography session, she told me she wants to play like Tiger Woods and hopes to be able to go on the course soon. I told her she has to start at the driving range when she's a l'il older and after that, she can go and play the course....it'll be a while Jemima but keep practising your short game!
In pink - the trademark Paula Creamer color!
Well, my dear Jemima...you are indeed a Paula Creamer in the making - but she insists she does not want to play like Creamer, she wants to play like Woods! I see lots of potential in this l'il lady. You know Jemima, Nan Nori also dreams of playing like Tiger Woods - I try to hit like Tiger but my ball always goes into the woods....so how dah???
You know a pro when you see one! Doesn't she look like one?
Our tee-off was booked for 9.15 am. Under overcast skies, it was a perfect day for golf except for one thing - it was very humid! Torah pulled a cart while Audi and I shared a buggy. I drove the buggy mostly and when we got to the green, I joined them in putting. At certain holes, where it's not so hilly, I walked....it was pure bliss to be back with the girls, bantering, joking, laughing and just having a good time. C'est la vie!
Above & below: Da Crazee Girlz dressed to the nines...if you wanna play badly, might as well try and look good playing badly!
I'd like to share with my dear readers the following video shots of Audi's and Torah's golf swing and my putting strokes:
